Australia, once characterised as a place where you get a ‘fair go’. A friendly place where everyone had ‘mates’. In this context a ‘mate’ was a friend, a pal, as distinct from a sexual partner. A sexual partner was mostly a spouse, colloquially known as ‘the old man’ or the ‘missus’. The authorities respected the people as the backbone of the country.
How things have changed! Aside from the other aspects alluded to above, the land of the ‘fair go’ has become the land of the ‘used’ and of the ‘unfairly suspected.
