Media hype abounds regarding the devastating effect of the melting (abnormal so they tell us) Polar Ice Cap. One news report even has the pole, waving the while surrender flag! AL Gore was right all along if you actually take any notice of these fear mongers! You should expect to see a mass southern migration of Polar Bears, probably in life boats – heading towards Australia any day now.
Oh but wait, didn’t I just read that the thaw has ended and a return to ice – for the winter, is on its way? How inconvenient!
Now while all this has been happening – and yes it has happened before, very little has made the press regarding the growing of the Southern Pole – the Antarctic Ice Cap.
Antarctic sea ice set another record this past week, with the most amount of ice ever recorded on day 256 of the calendar year (September 12 of this leap year).
National Public Radio (NPR) published an article on its website last month claiming, “Ten years ago, a piece of ice the size of Rhode Island disintegrated and melted in the waters off Antarctica. Two other massive ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula had suffered similar fates a few years before. The events became poster children for the effects of global warming. … There’s no question that unusually warm air triggered the final demise of these huge chunks of ice.”
NPR failed to mention anywhere in its article that Antarctic sea ice has been growing since satellites first began measuring the ice 33 years ago and the sea ice has been above the 33-year average throughout 2012.
Indeed, none of the mainstream media are covering this important story. A Google News search of the terms Antarctic, sea ice and record turns up not a single article on the Antarctic sea ice record. Amusingly, page after page of Google News results for Antarctic sea ice record show links to news articles breathlessly spreading fear and warning of calamity because Arctic sea ice recently set a 33-year low.
Sea ice around one pole is shrinking while sea ice around another pole is growing. This sure sounds like a global warming crisis to me.
As meteorologist Anthony Watts explains, new data show ice mass is accumulating on the Antarctic continent as well as in the ocean surrounding Antarctica. The new data contradict an assertion by global warming alarmists that the expanding Antarctic sea ice is coming at the expense of a decline in Antarctic continental ice.
The new data also add context to sensationalist media stories about declining ice in small portions of Antarctica, such as portions of West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula (see here, for example). The mainstream media frequently publish stories focusing on ice loss in these two areas, yet the media stories rarely if ever mention that ice is accumulating over the larger area of East Antarctica and that the continent as a whole is gaining snow and ice mass. Do we live on a silly planet or just have silly media reporters? Why is the growth of ice in the south totally (almost) ignored why there is much hype and fear mongering over the summer melt up north? Could all that melt water have tipped us slightly? Or is it possible that the Earth’s axis tilt is helping the ice, in summer, at the North Pole, which must be a little closer to that big glowing celestial body AKA the Sun, be slightly warmer and therefore is melting. That is of course until the solstice, and now we head back into the other seasons, namely autumn and then (drat’s) winter!
Meanwhile for some peculiar reason the southern ice cap seems to be expanding – growing – getting more ice. Not that the media would want to tell you that because it nulls all their hype from the northern ice cap!
Now in case you missed this BIG media News Item, let me put a tad of it here for your edification:
The idea that slight shifts in Earth’s axis might have been enough to trigger the ice ages is a century old.
But Harvard earth sciences Professor Peter Huybers has finally proved it, using computer models to test competing ideas – and finding that earth’s tilting axis is the only one that works.
The finding could have profound implications for our understanding of our planet’s climate – and could, its author says, be crucial to ‘predicting long-term changes in future climate.’
Two ‘cycles’ in the way Earth’s axis spins have an effect on the cycle – one lasting 10,000 years and one lasting roughly 40,000 years.
When they align correctly, ice melts. At the other extreme, glaciers advance.
The idea that these could dictate the cycles of glaciation in Earth’s climate was first proposed by Serbian geophysicist Milutin Milankovitch in the first half of the twentieth century. Read more .
The thing that annoys me the most is the use of computer modeling to predict our future. Anyone can sit at a computer and input multiple variables to come up with a position paper to suit his own needs. Add a bit here, take off a few points there, and put in a few ‘what if’s and maybe’s’ and what do you know…. We have a new scientific study that proves without a doubt human kind is changing the climate.
Ancel Keys is very famous for cherry picking his data, and I would think when companies do Meta analysis (think big pharma) they will take what works and discard what does not fit their projected end points, to come up with a solution that works for them.
What is so different for those who sit and plug away at computer modeling of weather patterns and predictions? We all know that the pseudo-religion of Global Climate Predictions AKA Climate Change is big business. Anyone who dares to stand out against it is written off (decapitated) as a skeptic and totally ostracized. Their funding is cut off; they have no future within their own scientific establishment….. Good Bye!
That will do from me today…… if you are out and about on the water, watch out for those polar bears won’t you! Oh, and someone better warn Julia Gillard PM of Australia and her Minister for Immigration – Chris Bowen, that our Open Border Policy seems to have reached the ears of those living at the North Pole. I wonder if they will settle peacefully on Nauru?
