Down Under – here in Australia the Government is giving subsidies to home owners to tempt them to install solar panels to run hot water and other energy intensive systems. The push to ‘green’ is getting quite tedious, but there are those who can afford it, taking up the offers.
This had me musing about something I read today in connection with – what is called the Carrington Event.
…. The biggest solar storm on record happened in 1859, during a solar maximum about the same size as the one we’re entering (into about now) according to NASA.
That storm has been dubbed the Carrington Event, after British astronomer Richard Carrington, who witnessed the mega flare and was the first to realize the link between activity on the sun and geomagnetic disturbances on Earth.
During the Carrington Event, northern lights were reported as far south as Cuba and Honolulu, while southern lights were seen as far north as Santiago, Chile.
As we have been advised already that the protection around the Earth AKA the Magnetic Field, has been breached, should we then be concerned if the Sun send out some huge flares and CME’s?
I found the original NASA article today while cruising the internet – stating that Earth’s Magnetic Field has a HUGE breach in it……. read it and see what this means. We are not as well protected as they would have you believe we are. I also read that if these giant solar eruptions are directed towards our planet, then we could be in for some interesting times. You can read more of my thoughts on a similar matter here.
Finally, comes a coronal mass ejection, or CME, a slower moving cloud of charged particles that can take several days to reach Earth’s atmosphere. When a CME hits, the solar particles can interact with Earth’s magnetic field to produce powerful electromagnetic fluctuations.
So why should I be concerned about home / business owners who have installed solar power/panels onto their roofs you may well ask.
Think on this.
If your home/factory solar power panels are feeding into the power grid, you could suffer major catastrophic damage should our Planet be struck with something akin to the Carrington Event. Think it cannot happen? Think again! Remember our magnetic (protection) field has been badly breached.
“Several federal government studies suggest that this extreme solar activity and emissions may result in complete blackouts for years in some areas of the nation. Moreover, there may also be disruption of power supply for years, or even decades, as geomagnetic currents attracted by the storm could debilitate the transformers.”
Now we all have seen or heard about those electrical transformers exploding when struck by lightning (sometimes), so imagine what could happen should we receive a mega solar flare – in the magnitude of what happened back in 1859 or even greater.
They had no computers or satellites then, no mobile phones, no microwave ovens, no GPS, no refrigerators, hospital emergency equipment requiring a power supply to operate it. They had no homes and businesses with solar panels on them either. Homes were not powered by electricity! But they did have telegraph lines….. And those fried!!!!
Think on what could happen should the power grid get fried with a massive solar strike….. The transformers would explode and so would most of the electronics on the planet. Those solar panels feed into the grid remember.
If your car is running at the time, it too could get fried!
What about your pacemaker?
Lastly, let us ponder on the power plants that supply us – be they hydro or atomic. That will take us down a completely different thought process. How will we keep those nuclear rods cool without the electricity to pump the water into the cooling pools etc? Meltdown worldwide anyone! Chernobyl and Fukushima will be small distant memories in comparison me thinks.
OMG how heavily we rely on electricity today.
