>King Of Kings and Lord Of Lords

>

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a real change in the way the world views and celebrates Christmas? I first noticed subtle changes in the stores this year. Growing up and in years past, it was relatively easy to find angels and nativity sets. Now I can hardly find them. Most of the stores are stocking the isles with modern color-coded ornaments. Where did all the manger scenes go?

Another change I’m seeing is gift-giving. Most of us were taught, “it is better to give than receive.” I can remember going into a five-and-dime store to buy gifts for family and friends. Many times, we just made homemade cookies, cakes and chocolates to give away. I’ve had to be very careful, creative and resourceful in purchasing gifts this year. Our family is truly committed to remaining debt-free and living within our means. It astounds me that the stores advertise things like $99 GPS and $89 power tools or expensive sweaters, camera and gaming system bundles and call them great deals. Who can afford that? What happened to, “ it’s the thought that counts.”

I don’t think I’m alone. Many people are shopping at Goodwill and dollar stores this year, and no matter what Congress says, I don’t see the economy getting better. People are really struggling. Many are just doing without. Oh, and guess where all the manger scenes and angels are? The decorations of our childhood memories are now considered old, worthless junk and can be found on Goodwill shelves around the country. What’s happening? Are we forgetting to keep Christ in Christmas?

For to us a child
is born,
to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, “Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
             Isaiah 9:6 (NIV)
