>Bette Midler in her 1985 song tells us: God is watching us from a distance.
When I pondered on the words to this well known song, it kind of intimated that God is like some giant, All Seeing Eye in The Sky!
I just want to share with you my joy in knowing that God is NOT a BIG EYE in the SKY (fantastic Picture from NASA)watching over all of humanity from a distance.
Our God is a Personal God, a loving and intimate God, who created you and me, and everything before time, as we understand it – ever came to be. None of us are part of a chance evolution…… something that perhaps crawled out of a primordial swamp to slither onto dry land and ‘evolve’ (luckily) into an upright, air breathing, cognitive human being.
I like to think of our human family as God’s Pièce de résistance (the best part). Originally, the pièce de résistance was the most substantial dish in a meal, but now the term generally refers to quality, not quantity.
So we are the best part – the quality part – Of God’s Creation, and there is NO WAY that our Creator is going to absent himself, withdraw from the wonderful intimacy, of His QUALITY Creation —— you and me!
Many times I have heard people say that ‘we cannot know God’ the concept of an all loving, all knowing, all forgiving, intimate God is just too much for them to come to terms with. Some even say there is no proof that God exists. Perhaps they are scared!
But we know better don’t we?
We know that God has made Himself known in a tangible way in Jesus as well as in nature, history, conscience and scripture.
At the Day of Judgment, those who rely upon the excuse “there was not enough evidence!” will be in for an big surprise. God has revealed Himself, and we can know Him. Jesus said, “No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him”. (Mt. 11:27)
Theologian Alistair McGrath once wrote, “Jesus allows us to sample God.”
When people saw Jesus, they saw God. “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” (II Cor. 5:19).
God could reach out to us effectively because He reached out Himself. It was God in Christ who acted on our behalf; it wasn’t some mere human emissary who brought us a good word from God. And it is the Holy Spirit — God again– who continues to minister in us while we wait for the glory which is to come.
Jn 14:15-16; 23-26 (Message Translation) Jesus told us………
If you love me, show it by doing what I’ve told you.
I will talk to the Father, and he’ll provide you another Friend (counselor) so that you will always have someone with you.
This Friend is the Spirit of Truth. The godless world can’t take him in because it doesn’t have eyes to see him, doesn’t know what to look for. But you know him already because he has been staying with you, and will even be in you!
HE ALSO PROMISED His Disciples (that’s us isn’t it?)
I will not leave you orphaned. I’m coming back.
I’m telling you these things while I’m still living with you.
The Friend, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send at my request, will make everything plain to you. He will remind you of all the things I have told you.
I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left–feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.
Jesus tried to tell His disciples that he was returning to The Father, but first had to suffer, that He was going to be killed like a common criminal…… suffering an horrendous death on a cross.
He also promised them (you and I) we would never be left on our own…. But the empty Cross just confused them.
Until that very first Easter Morning, when the women went to the tomb!
Mt 28:5-8 (Message Bible)
The angel spoke to the women: “There is nothing to fear here. I know you’re looking for Jesus, the One they nailed to the cross. 6He is not here. He was raised, just as he said. Come and look at the place where he was placed.
Now, get on your way quickly and tell his disciples, “He is risen from the dead. He is going on ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there.’ That’s the message.”
The women, deep in wonder and full of joy, lost no time in leaving the tomb. They ran to tell the disciples.
This is what all have to be thankful for…..
Our God is a personal God
He is NOT some ethereal spirit out in space watching over us from a distance
He does NOT make promises he will not keep
Yes, He died…. (For us) to reconcile us with God our Father
Yes, He is Risen, (For us) and ascended to His Father’s Kingdom
Yes, He has gone on ahead of us, to prepare a place for us
Yes He will come again to take us home
NO! He has not left us alone.
God loves us… Jesus died for us – rose for us – ascended for us and has reconciled us with God. He left us with the gift of the Holy Spirit who resides in us……..
Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own – you were bought at a price. (1 Cor 6…. vv19)
Thank you Lord God. Amen
