According to Senator Lemieux, there are over 2000 oil skimmers sitting idle in the USA that could be deployed to assist with helping to clean up – some of the devastation currently manifesting in the Gulf of Mexico. Impound them. Confiscate them. Borrow them. Seize them. Do whatever is necessary – but get them down to the Gulf to assist the cleanup effort.
If one was a cynic then you would believe that the complete inaction on the part of this administration was purposeful and used in an effort to perhaps ram through their agenda. A crisis was created, it’s almost as if it is deliberately not being fixed, clear options on the table are not being used and one can only wonder why!
Senator Lemieux spoke with President Obama and the exchange between the two over the 2,000 skimmers in the US currently going unused to clean up this massive oil spill will blow your mind!
Senator Lemieux says, “I think it is outrageous that we only have 20 skimmers off the coast of Florida. There are 2000 skimmers in the United States and we haven’t even asked as a federal government for those skimmers to come into the gulf….the federal government who wants to take over every other aspect of our life can’t get this one thing right…”
President Obama’s response about the skimmers not being used was, “We can’t take these skimmers from other places in the country because they might have an oil spill!” What?!?
Kind of like saying we could not send a fire engine to a fire somewhere, in case the fire station caught alight and needed the engine!!
And what about all those ‘outside’ offers of assistance? Countries and agencies have been knocking at President Obama’s Door offering their help. All have been refused, because the Coast Guard has things under control!
The United States said Thursday it had received offers of aid to clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill from Canada and Mexico, 10 European countries, South Korea and the United Nations.
The US State Department said there was no immediate need for the assistance offered but that the US Coast Guard was trying to evaluate whether there would be in the future.
“These offers include experts in various aspects of oil spill impacts, research and technical expertise, booms, chemical oil dispersants, oil pumps, skimmers, and wildlife treatment,” the State Department said in a statement.
The State Department announced Tuesday it had received aid offers from 12 countries and international organizations but refused to identify them, saying it would only name the countries when and if it accepted aid from them.
But in a switch, the State Department identified 13 countries and one organization which had offered to provide aid.
They are: Britain, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Nations.
The State Department said Washington was grateful for the offers of assistance.
“The US Coast Guard, the lead US agency in this response, continues to monitor developments and evaluate specific needs, and is currently reviewing offers of assistance,” it said.
For goodness sake, isn’t it time to swallow pride and gratefully accept the offers being made by others, who are qualified and available to come and help fix this dreadful situation?
One would almost think the President either did not care about what is happening, or was too pig headed to see that offers of help – would be beneficial and are needed right now – otherwise the Requiem for The Gulf should be being practised right now! This will be the world’s largest funeral procession and the longest obituary in living memory. Maybe even one of the shortest Presidency’s in recent history too!
